Upcycling for Beginners: What You Need to Know

Upcycling is cost effective, great fun and allows you to transform your home with pre-existing belongings. You don’t have to be a genius with a paintbrush or the best handy-man around to be able to join in but if you are new to upcycling, here’s our three top tips for beginners.

  1. Be Prepared

The famous phrase ‘fail to plan, prepare to fail’ is certainly true when it comes to upcycling. You want to ensure that you have all the right equipment for the job, in order for all your hard work to not go to waste. If you research well, you’ll discover which tools are better than others as even the littlest things like the quality of the paintbrush can completely change the overall finish of your upcycled project.

Once you have all the best tools, make sure you prepare the space you’ll be completing your project in. It should be a clean, dry and well protected space. After all you don’t want any cobwebs stuck to your newly painted piece of furniture! Look into investing in a workspace unit like ours, which is ground floor based and super easy to access.

  1. Be Imaginative and Have Fun

Being creative is the most important aspect of upcycling. A creative idea doesn’t just have to be based on transforming the look of an item or piece of furniture, it could potentially change its purpose completely like the upcycles we featured in our previous blog, which you can find here. You may think that an old piece of furniture has no other purpose but once you’ve let your imagination run wild, there are endless possibilities.

  1. Shop Second Hand

You may have spotted an expensive piece of vintage furniture in a high street or designer shop that you think would look great in your home, however it’s likely that you will find a very similar version in a charity shop or from a car boot sale. Although it may not look identical, you can certainly transform it to look even better with a lick of paint and a lot of love, for a fraction of the price.

If you already use a self-storage unit, be sure to go through the furniture in this and see if you could potentially transform any of it into something you can love and use all over again. Don’t be afraid of getting started with upcycling, start transforming your home now. If you need space to be able to upcycle with ease, then why not look at using one of our workspace units?
