Each year we take out our Christmas decorations, spending most of our time unravelling strings of lights and beads. As well as that, we dust off wreaths and check how many baubles we will need to replace from last year. If only we spent a little more time storing everything carefully at the end of Christmas, life would be less stressful at the beginning of the next Christmas season. The key to storing the decorations carefully is ensuring they stay dry, dust free and are not crushed.
Now that Christmas is over for the year, here are a few tips and tricks on how to pack away your decorations with care, to ensure they are not ruined for next year.
- Christmas lights – to keep your lights tangle-free, wrap them around a piece of card or an old coffee canister. Not only is it easier to pack away, but it is also easier to use again next year as you can unravel them and display them again in minutes.
- Strings of beads – for any beads you have had delicately placed on your tree, store them in empty plastic water bottles. This will prevent them getting tangled, as well as not getting lost in the corners of boxes.
- Christmas baubles – for smaller baubles, use old egg boxes or plastic apple trays to store them. This will protect the baubles from smashing as well as meaning they are organised and ready to reuse next year. Store these trays in a large storage box as this will prevent them being crushed or covered in dust at any point during the rest of the year.
- Wreaths – once you remove wreathes from your door, hang them on coat hangers and cover it in dry cleaning plastic covers. This prevents them being crushed in storage or covered in dust.
- Artificial trees – if you have an artificial tree that you re-use year on year, then wrap it in cling film or alternatively, use an old sheet as a bag to keep your tree safe and clean.
- Christmas candles – when the Christmas season is over, you may be left with lots of festive scents that you won’t need until next year. Protect these candles by covering them with old hosiery stockings and storing them in a box. This will ensure they stay clean and protected.
Having packed all the Christmas decorations away safely, storing them securely in your own home can require a lot of storage space. However, a self- storage unit will provide a clean, dry place for you to store these items, without you having to sacrifice lots of space in your own home.
